About Simon
Simon is a Director of Salient primarily responsible for training development and has extensive worldwide aviation experience.
He graduated from the Royal Australian Airforce Academy in 1982 and flew Dakota, Hercules, and Boeing 707 aircraft. Before leaving the RAAF became the flying safety staff officer for Air Lift Group. He has held management roles, trained and examined with Australian-based and International airlines.
Simon has extensive experience working with regulatory and other advisory bodies. He remains a corresponding member of the UKCAA CRM advisory panel, until recently was the airline training representative on the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Flight Training Panel and the Industry Co-Chair of CASA’s Flight Crew Licensing Sub-Committee. He was the airline representative on several other Australian regulatory change drafting bodies and was an active participant in the US FAA AQP development and drafting committees.
He continues to contract as a trainer and examiner on the A330. As a member of the IATA Training and Qualification Initiative helped found the Evidence Based Training Foundation. Simon received his Doctorate in 2009 and is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales.
Simon is the principal consultant with Aha Research Services and works with a variety of airlines, regulatory authorities and the LOSA Collaborative in that role. He was a member of the joint PARC/CAST Flight Deck Automation Working Group and a contributor to their report on the operational use of flight path management systems. Simon was the 2002 recipient of the Flight Safety Foundation Award for Achievement in Human Factors and Flight Safety.
Simon has been with us in the development of EBT from the outset working with Mike in the original working group. He was instrumental in the proof-of-concept work done with Emirates. His knowledge, and skill as an instructor combined with a vision for the future of training contributes very significantly to everything we do.
